WFA Cup 2012
Blues Ladies welcome Sunderland Women to the DCS Stadium on Sunday afternoon (25 March), as they aim for a place in the FA Womens Cup semi-final.
David Parker’s team face a tough test against the reigning FA Women’s Premier League Champions, but confidence will be high after they won their first two matches of the season versus Liverpool and Everton Ladies respectively.
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match, Parker said: “I think it’s a very different competition again. Obviously the way that things are working with the scheduling is that it’s the FA Cup, then after that it’s England (v Croatia on 31 March) and after that back into the league (FA WSL).
“But it’s a different mindset, different opposition, different challenges and we just need to make sure we’re at it, because Sunderland will be extremely difficult.
“People will look at it from a Super League team playing a Premier League team and go ‘it’s easy, that’s a given’ – it’s going to be far from that. They’ve got players that should be in the Super League, and maybe as a club they should have been there as well. It’s going to be very tough.”
The semi-final draw takes place on Monday 26 March with five other WSL clubs vying for a last four berth, including heavyweights Arsenal Ladies and Everton.
Blues centre-back Emily Westwood added: “We played them (Sunderland) in a friendly before the start of the WSL last season. They gave us a tough game up there but it’s a cup game, anything could happen – it’s the FA Cup. We’ve got to do what we’re good at and see the game out and that will take us through to the next round of the cup.”
